I've had a hectic week, sorry for the lack of posts. This is my 102nd on this blog, I'm surprised I've had more than 20. I'm heading to California tomorrow for a week so I won't be updating for a little while longer. Hopefully when I get back I'll have a pocket full of fresh gambling-made cash and can do the UFC 91 predictions in the 2 hours I'll have back here before it starts. Album of the Week: Supercontinent- Vaalbara

Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Supercontinent is a fucking rad post metal/sludge band with heavy and yet extremely melodic riffs throughout their debut album available in the store here. A lot of it actually reminds me of Mastodon, mostly in the song Cataclysms which I've included below. So check this out if you like some badass heavy music without all the gimmicks and shitty singing, and screaming used for emphasis instead of genre enabling.

Cool fact I found while trying to find some info on the band: Vaalbara is Earth's first theorized supercontinent. Ooh, and there's an ex-member of Black Dahlia Murder in the band too.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins: Bills PK -110

The Bills are a really young and inexperienced, but good, team. After the Ravens decimated the wildcat offense of Miami last week I think the blueprint has been laid and the gimmick which was the only way Miami was winning is over. I usually stay away from pick bets because they end up being sucker bets, but I like Buffalo here and like the front runner for playing Skeletor in a future Masters of the Universe movie would say, "Just win, baby."

Atlanta Falcons @ Philadelphia Eagles: 45 Under -110

Atlanta have been very surprising this year, but Matt Ryan has yet to face a defense as complex as the Eagles'. In this battle of the birds I don't see either offense flying very high, and unless both teams use that last horrible pun as motivation, I don't see them scoring more than 45.

Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers: 49ers -5.5 -110

With a new ex-Bears coach the underachieving 49er defense which finally showed signs of life last week should have a breakout game against a Matt Hasselbeck-less Seahawks team. Houston Texans vs. Detroit Lions: 47 Under -110

Houston will win this one easily but I have no idea why the over is this high, so the good bet is to take the under. This isn't college and Houston isn't going to run up the score, and Detroit isn't going to do much with an unexperienced quarterback and Calvin Johnson as their entire offense. Fantasy special of the week: Kevin Walter- 90 yards 1 TD.

New York Jets vs. Oakland Raiders: NYJ -3 -110

Did you know Ronald Curry leads the Raiders receivers, with 6 catches on the year? Yeah, they're that bad. The Jets have a pretty good run defense this year so there's no reason they can't cover. And that's all I have to say about that.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Green Bay Packers: Colts -1 -110

They looked like the unstoppable offense Colts of the last few years last week, so I'm ready to get back on the favorite bandwagon and look for a shootout here with Indy getting the best of the still banged up Packer defense. Will be interesting to see if the NFL's leading receiver Greg Jennings will be able to get his weekly huge play against the cover 2 the Colts run so well.

Also, the lines might get changed up when it happens but if Tony Romo is starting for the Cowboys and the line is still at -7 against the Rams, bet it. If Brad Johnson is starting and the over is still at 44, bet the under. That's it for me this week, in the immortal words of Marshawn Lynch. Nuh nuh nuh gone.

New York Jets vs. Cincinnati Bengals: NYJ -9.5 -110

Carson Palmer is out, which means the god to gamblers, Ryan Fitzpatrick, is in. 2 weeks ago against Cleveland Fitzy put up 3 INTs and a fumble, and the Jets defense is a lot better than the Browns so look for them to control the ball most of the game and scoring a lot against a shotty Cinci defense.

Green Bay Packers vs. Seattle Seahawks: GB +1 -110

It's looking like Matt Hasselbeck is out, along with his backup Seneca Wallace, which means Charlie "I lost my starting job in Cleveland in 15 minutes" Frye is getting the start for Seattle. Green Bay's defense is still hurting pretty bad, but I see no reason their offense can't do enough to win which is all that's needed.

Take Your Pick: Toss Up

Chicago Bears vs. Atlanta Falcons: Chi -3 -100 (I averaged this out as some sites actually have Chi +110 so if you are betting this look for one of those.)

I don't think the Falcons are as good as this line suggests, barring Matt Ryan having a career breakout game, Da Bears will cover. Fantasy Shocker of the week: Greg Olsen 100+ receiving with a TD.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Denver Broncos: Jax +3 +100 (Another varying line, check for the best payout)

I think this is the upset of the week. Jacksonville's defense is the best Denver's going to have played this year and their offense should be able to shred up Denver's slow guys. Should be a great game either way.

Album of the Week: Annuals- Such Fun

This album was just released yesterday, and I'm already in love with it. Their last album Be He Me was great, but lacked staying power. This effort is much more polished and well written, and just all around fantastic. There's also a large neo-folk/country tint to it which was never all that present until now, but flows well with their North Cackalacky roots. Do yourself a favor and buy it, or download if you're a pirate.

Indianapolis Colts -3 -125 vs. Houston Texans

The Colts good offensive line is now back, to go along with Peyton Manning getting a much needed week off to rest his still recovering knee so I see no reason why they can't cover 3 points. Even without Bob Sanders, the Colts offense is too good and the Texans defense has been underplaying too much for Houston to stay in the game.

San Diego Chargers -6.5 -110 vs. Miami Dolphins

Like I said last week, the Chargers are a lot better than everyone thinks. Even with LT not looking like his old self, Rivers has enough firepower to kill this weak defense. No upset like Miami did to New England, this is going to be a blowout.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Denver Broncos Over 46.5 -110

Head to head this is the toughest call of the week. Denver's defense is horribly slow but their offense is one of the best in the league. Tampa Bay on the other hand has a solid run game, which Denver has yet to play good against this season, and a good defense. All things considered, this seems like a good candidate for reaching the over before the 4th quarter. Two fantasy shockers in this game: Earnest Graham and Brandon Marshall, both scoring over 20 points in a standard format.

Seeing as I won a hundred at the casino last night and have spent a lot of time on CentSports lately, I figured even being late I might as well give some insight on each weekend's NFL lines I like the most. This is not a guide to betting, please understand I'm not a professional and am only putting these up for entertainment purposes. Betting is illegal (wink).

Atlanta @ Carolina: Car -6.5 -100

Atlanta hasn't showed that they can beat a good team yet, so I'm not buying into the Matt Ryan mini-hype. Carolina has also beaten 2 teams much better than Atlanta and had a tough loss last week where they couldn't really figure out what to do on offense which should be corrected this week and run well enough to cover against a defense giving up 5 yards a carry. Fantasy sleeper alert: I'm starting Jonathan Stewart over Michael Turner in my money league this week. We'll see how this one turns out.

Green Bay @ Tampa Bay: 43 over -110

This is going to be a shootout. Last week against the Bears Tampa Bay showed they can not only throw the ball, but they can also give up a lot of passing to even a not so great offense. Al Harris (CB) is out with a broken spleen for Green Bay which means that even if Galloway isn't back yet Tampa should be able to throw just as proficiently as they did last week.

San Diego @ Oakland: SD -7.5 -110

San Diego is a really good team who have had a couple really tough breaks early in the season which is still leaving them to be a question mark on lines that they shouldn't be. Rivers is the real deal and Nnamdi Asomugha revealing he will be playing with a fractured elbow Phillip should have a nice day. Doesn't hurt that LT showed that his toe is feeling much better on monday night last week. The Raiders passing game is horrible and as long as the Chargers D doesn't let Michael Bush and McFadden pull an AD Peterson from last year they should be able to cover and then some.

MMA =/= Ultimate Fighting

I just capped that off of aol.com under a section of "Activities for your family on weekends". I'd say a good one half of all mainstream coverage of mixed martial arts refers to it as "Ultimate Fighting". Especially good on this example is "Ultimate Fighting is defined as mixed martial arts competition...". No, you can't define an organization using what defines it, it doesn't work that way. That would be like if I called a high school baseball game Major League baseball in high school. You would think the people who write these things would put a little more research into it besides "Hey, I heard one of my son's friends talking about this Ultimate Fighting stuff. I should suggest that, whatever it is. I'll just google 'Ultimate Fighting' and see what comes up and post that." Also the picture isn't of anyone in the UFC, so even more points there. They could at least have a link to Sherdog so people can actually read about the sport instead of just posting links to buy shit, especially from Chuck "Lost 3 of his last 4 fights" Liddell.

Songs That Should be In Rock Band/Guitar Hero

The other day a friend of mine was saying that the new Kanye song should be in Rock Band as a treat to the people who sing and drum. I told him he's an idiot because it'd be dumb to sing a computer's (autotune) part. But it got me thinking, what songs would be good to play in the future installments of the video games? Here's what I've come up with so far, feel free to post any suggestions/criticism in the comments. Keep in mind I'm biased towards the vocals since I end up doing them most of the time when I play, and I tried to exclude anything with screaming or instruments outside of the core three.

Beginners

Hot Rod Circuit- Consumed By Laziness

It's got a little bit for everyone. Cool bass line, simple riff with light solos, fun drumming and singing. I'd kick a hole in the wall doing the "My mother told me" part.

The Beatles- Come Together

Mostly because I want there to be a Beatles song on one of these games, but I think as a sing along this is their best suited. Not much for the guitarists, but you guys have two games all to yourself and can give some other people a little bit of fun once in awhile.

Weezer- El Scorcho

Another simple one with fun parts to it. The gargle at the beginning would also be required.

Band of Horses- The General Specific

The drums and guitar are simple as hell, but the singing chart would be all over the place to keep it fun.

Misfits- Hybrid Moments

Danzig + punk= pretty tough. The bass is probably the most complex chart, but Misfits merchandise anything they can and everyone likes to sing like Danzig when they have an excuse to.

Medium

Brand New- The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows

Fuck you, it's Brand New and they can be on whatever I say they can be on. And this is a demo of the song, as the normal version I have is an m4a and those don't stream, if you never noticed I tip toed around that.

Bush- Comedown

The good 90's alternative bands don't get enough love in the games, so here's some sweetness and probably the best suited song on the album for the games. Challenging charts all the way around.

Days Away- God & Mars

This is the first song I thought of, as I've always wanted to know how to play the drums for it. Good singing from Keith and the guitars are challenging enough to give everyone some problems as they get better.

Gatsbys American Dream- Counterfeit Language

Every Gatsbys song is a musical adventure, but I'd say this is the Indiana Jones of them all when it comes to being best suited from the game and not Speaker for the Dead which is my first choice, but one of them darn m4as.

Muse- Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist

I believe Assassin is on one of the upcoming games, but Black Holes songs shouldn't be the only ones to get on video games. In fact, one of the future Guitar Hero band series games should be for Muse, because all of their songs are harder than anything Aerosmith's ever done.

Queens of the Stone Age- Mexicola

This song rocks dicks off, and after No One Knows and 3's & 7's were included in two of the Guitar Heros and Go With the Flow on Rock Band, they might as well keep throwing Homme's and companies shit on there because it's all perfect for the games

Circa Survive- Living Together

Another one harder for the singing, since no geek off the street can sing like Anthony, but all together this a tougher song.

The Fall of Troy- Quarter Past

I think it'd be funny to see people not familiar with the song saying "What's so hard about this?" through the first couple minutes of the song, and then Thomas Erak kicks in their door and melts their faces off.

Minus The Bear- Absinthe Party At the Fly Honey Warehouse

The closest thing I could think of to a math rock song, one of which should have been on the original two guitar heros.

3- All That Remains

Joey, Billy and Gartdrumm appear to be what the standard skill level should be for, and the guitar solo is pretty damn dope as well.

Expert

Avenged Sevenfold- I Won't See You Tonight (Part 2)

This song's like one giant nine minute guitar solo, and there's even a pretty tough vocal bit at seven minutes.

Coheed & Cambria- The Willing Well I: Fuel For the Feeding End

They have harder songs on guitar, but I think this is hardest for everything considered. I think I failed singing on Welcome Home the first time I tried, but you gotta sing like Claudio if you want it to be kickass.

The Dear Hunter- Dear Ms. Leading

It's a scientific fact that Erick Serna can shred like a madman, combine that with some tough Casey singing and Sammy drumming and you got yourself a pretty frustrating four and a half minutes.

Wax On Radio- Guilding The Lily

I will smash every drum pad on earth if I ever get to play Sammy Del Real's bit at the end of this, so intense.

2005: The Receiving End of Sirens- Between The Heart & The Synapse

This is probably my favorite album of all time. It's nothing groundbreaking, they didn't change the face of music with it, but to me everything about it is perfect. Packed to the gills with wordplay and a creative concept, Brendan Brown and Casey Crescenzo wrote such great lyrics to go along with the sequencing laden post hardcore music they perfected. I've listened to this album well over a hundred times, and for the first 75 or so I always took everything in the songs literally, but as time passed little hints and hidden meanings would always present themselves and give me a whole new appreciation for everything contained within. I've never actually seen Brendan and Casey explain all of the song's meanings, but one that will be with me for the rest of my life is the recurring lines throughout the album "This is the last night in my body/Somehow, for now, this skin will have to do." The latter line being sung either after or simultaneously with the first. But I always ignored the second line, and focused solely on the first. Telling myself I would eventually change from the rut I was stuck in, I would always repeat in my head "This is the last night in my body" before going to bed. Then I'd wake up the next day and repeat my same routine. One late night it all clicked for me, I heard the second line "Somehow, for now, this skin will have to do" and I realized, you can't change who you are over night. Be content with what you are and make the best of it. I know the whole "This album changed my life" thing is cliche and hard to believe, but over the past 2 years, 9 months and 18 days (Yeah, that's right I know the exact day I bought the album) this album has helped make me a better person more than anything else I've ever had.

I still remember the day I bought this album. I took the day off from school and had one of DirecTV's music channels on all day and heard "Blood Red Summer" and thought it was a cool song. Five hours later I still had What did I do to deserve, what did I do to deserve stuck in my head. Later that night I went to Best Buy along with a friend who was going to pick up a new t.v. and I saw this album and figured what the hell it's only $9. Little did I know this album would basically reshape the way my life was, in the way it set up a lot of things, but that's another blog entirely. Filled with concepts, catchy prog pop songs and badass guitars, this album set up the success the band is seeing today. I made a lot of friends through this album, most of whom will hopefully read this, so for old time's sake give this album a listen and remember how awesome it was the first time you heard it.

Hot Rod Circuit's front man, Andy Jackson, stated that when writing this album "This was the first record I can honestly say I wrote and took some time on lyrics and breaking it all down." and it becomes blatantly obvious that it was the recipe for the success this album had. I may have jumped the gun a little when I said Bleed American was the catchiest album I've heard, because this is right there with it. I've never been sure what to actually call the sound of this album, I usually settle on "blue collar pop" but not in a Bruce Springsteen kind of way. It's a perfect blend of pop punk and neo country, fused into a kind of superior version of both.

If you have a moment head on over to evantanner.net to see the tribute they've set up. Lots of good stories about the man. Here's one I remember hearing about earlier this year, and shows how kind of a soul Evan was. The world lost a good human being yesterday.

A Parent Teacher Association had been working hard to raise the funds needed to build a safe playground for the 870+ children attending this low-income school in Fort Worth. A $5,000 grant that the school received for the playground had a stipulation. After raising the remaining funds needed for the playground equipment the school would have to build it themselves.

They needed 150 volunteers to do the build successfully. A parent started contacting as many athletes as she could think of. She knew that strength and stamina was what the school was going to need to get the playground built in one day. There were few responses. Professional fighter, Evan Tanner of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) heard about the need for tough guys with big hearts and offered to fly in from Las Vegas to help.

“Your Cause is a good one.” “I will be there,” Evan Tanner simply stated.

The playground build was on Saturday, November 3rd. Starting at 8am and ending at 5pm when the playground was completed. Evan Tanner showed up bright and early with a smile on his face and ready to work.

Tanner spent the first part of the day building a rock climb side by side with a parent and some teachers. After that job was done he moved outside to the site and just jumped in and moved from one task to another. Seeing each task completed before he moved on to the next. Not once did he stand still unless it was for a picture with a fan.

This album is Bleed American, after 9/11 they had to change it to be a self titled album and I decided to post that cover just to show how fucking dumb of a change it was. The original cover had the JEW part in smaller font with Bleed American right next to it. SO OFFENSIVE! Anygay, this is like the quintessential American Rock record with singles up the ass and good music all around. Self recorded and platinum certified, this was such a significant album in the way that it showed artists that they didn't have to do whatever labels told them, even if some bands forgot that COUGHcoheedCOUGH. It very well may be the catchiest album of all time, as anyone from ages 8 to 50 can appreciate any song on the album.

2000: Kind of Like Spitting- Nothing Makes Sense Without It

I actually just got this album in the past couple of months, but I like it a lot and I couldn't find anything else good from 2000 aka the time of nu metal and Eminem. Singer-songwriter Ben Barnett wrote an album of songs that could easily be confused for early Brand New demos as they do sound much alike. Wailing slow songs of cynicism and drawing comparisons to Elliot Smith and Billy Bragg, Barnett seemed to have bridged the gap between the early midwest emo sound with the newer label stamped on anything with feeling to it. I'm finding it hard to keep writing while trying to pay attention to the Bears so this one's a little short, but check it out if you like Brand New or just good heartfelt music in general.

The debut and my personal favorite album of 3, Paint By Number is a funky as fuck, fun-riff driven album by the now Prog Metal band. Every song is something you can nod your head or tap your foot too, with really no weak songs on the whole album. I actually made a cd for a friend recently with the song Old Grey Dog on it, since his dog who was probably my favorite pet in the entire world had died recently. He loved it, and when I listened to it after his dog dying it actually struck harder with me of how great of a song it is.

That's right I'm so committed to this blog I'm even posting on my birthday. And fuck imageshack for not giving direct links to images anymore, like I'm not going to just get it off the dumb fucking "show your friends" link. Hey, friend, look! I'm posting this image on the internet and I wanted to show you first! Alright, enough of that. This album rocks balls, it's that simple. The debut album and aftermath of Kyuss, QOTSA came out swinging with this post stoner rock album. Trading in boring, repeating riffs with monotone singing Josh Homme came back with awesome, repeating riffs with great vocals. I know their later album Songs for the Deaf is a concept about driving through the desert, but this album has the same feeling to me. It was basically Josh Homme and Alfredo Hernandez pounding out all of these songs, as Hernandez played drums and Homme played everything else, credited as himself and Carlo Von Sexron. At the end of the last track "I Was A Teenage Hand Model" a voicemail can be heard of future bass player and all around asshole Nick Oliveri saying he would love to join the band. So do yourself a favor and get one last gasp of summer by throwing this album on and drinking a couple beers while the sun's going down.

1997: Mark Mulcahy- Fathering

When picking out my list I wanted to try not to have any bands or artists have more than one appearance through the years, but this is the exception. Previously appearing in the 1989 post with Miracle Legion, Mark Mulcahy later went solo after they and Polaris became defunct. His first solo album, Fathering is his best to date. I found this album at a very confusing and dark time of my life and it helped me get through my problems, so each song has a special meaning to me. From the moment I pressed play and opening track, Hey Self Deafeater, started, I knew I had found something special. At that moment in time the lyrics were exactly what I had needed to hear, and I'll forever be grateful for Mulcahy writing this music, "Never mind overjoyed, just start with happy, there's no more silent nights, and no more horrid fights, just got a new place and put a thousand miles between you and your wrong impressions... Hey self defeater, you're underrated by yourself so quit looking down, and look up." Most of the album tells tales of love lost and fictional men, but it's all beautifully arranged and shows how talented of a musician Mulcahy is. Proven by the fact that Thom Yorke has admitted to Mulcahy being a large influence of his and even went as far as to dedicate a song to him at a Radiohead show in Boston. With spacious, echoing guitar riffs the song Ciao, My Shining Star eerily resembles an unreleased Jeff Buckley song as Mulcahy showcases his falsetto. The album's not as upbeat as most of his other work, but it's easily his best.

1996: Alice In Chains- Unplugged

I believe this was the third CD I ever owned, after the aforementioned Kerplunk and Paul's Boutique. It was the first album I bought upon moving to Illinois after my parents separated, so understandably it holds a lot of memories and sentiment to me. When Alice In Chains recorded this, singer Layne Staley was going through a vicious bout with heroin addiction, and if you've seen the broadcast or DVD of this night you can see it had taken it's toll. With dark rings around his eyes the frail Layne, sporting pink hair, looked like he wouldn't had been able to lift a guitar had he needed to. But his voice, my favorite voice ever, that was still intact. At the time the original broadcast aired this was one of the most beautiful things I had seen in my young life, but now it's almost painful to watch. Layne's is just such a sad story. But this album was his swan song, his last gift to everyone who loved him. He and Jerry Cantell provided some of the best harmonizing to ever be shown on MTV, everything about the entire set was perfect. From the songs chosen to the performance to the visualization, it will always stand the test of time.

1995: Dre Dog- I Hate You With A Passion

Quite possibly one of the grimiest albums made since the emergence of the Wu Tang Clan, this was the last album released by Andre Adams under the name Dre Dog, as he later changed it to Andre Nickatina. The staple of the Dre Dog era was gritty beats and rhymes about the darker side of the rap game, and this album exemplified it all. With production by TC among others, and features from Black C of RBL Posse, Cougnut of IMP, and Totally Insane, the Bay Area star power of this album is what makes it such a classic. But Dre Dog didn't need too much help from others, as the solo songs put so much emotion and despair into glorifying a lifestyle which seemed to be taking it's toll. It's like watching the conflict of Dre being so caught up in what he's doing that from song to song you see both sides of it all. From partying with drugs on "Powda 4 The Hoes" to the repercussions of his habits on "Situation Critical". You hear it all on this album, and it gives a great view into what was going on in San Francisco in the early to mid 90's.

Another Bay Area album on the list, noticing the trend here? Souls of Mischief was an offshoot of the group Hieroglyphics from Oakland consisting of MCs A-Plus, Tajai, Phesto and Opio. At a time where everything coming out of California was either g-funk or straight up gangsta rap, Souls of Mischief went the other route and created a hip hop classic. Filled with jazzy bass lines and creative raps, this is one of the albums that created the mold for what hip hop was supposed to be.

1992: Green Day- Kerplunk

This was the first CD I ever owned. And I didn't even own a CD player at the time, I couldn't find the tape at the store I went to when I was 8. My older cousin always played Dominated Love Slave and at my age anything that sounded that funny was a required album to own. So, regrettably, I listened to that one song over and over and over and neglected the rest of the serious, much better tracks. A couple of years later when Dookie came out and I began forming my actual good taste in music, I finally had a walkman and ended up playing this so many times and bringing it with me everywhere so much that the foil kind of stuff on the back of a CD wore off and I had to get a new one. This album really doesn't sound like anything else that was coming out at the time. It actually featured "Welcome to Paradise", probably the greatest song ever made about Oakland, which was later redone and put on Dookie. The CD version had 4 bonus tracks, my favorite being a cover of The Who's "My Generation".

This is still a great record, solidified by the fact people still listen to it constantly to this day, with a few songs still played on the radio every week. 1990: Mark Lanegan- The Winding Sheet

Kicking off the 90's is an album by a man with one of the most distinctive voices in the history of music. Lanegan started off in the band Screaming Trees and went on to release 6 solo albums, as well as feature with other musicians such as Queens of the Stone Age, Isobel Campbell, Soulsavers and The Gutter Twins. The Winding Sheet was his solo debut and established that he didn't need to stay with his grunge/alternative roots to make a great record. Featuring mostly acoustic guitars this album has a very eerie and bittersweet feel to it, as Lanegan's voice bellows out tales of hangovers and despair, but still manages to keep your finger off the trigger as there's still a sort of beauty to it all. He was also the first to cover "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", originally written by Leadbelly, and later covered by Nirvana on their Unplugged performance. Kurt Cobain and Chris Novoselik also perform backup vocals and bass on the song "Down In the Dark". Not necessarily my favorite Lanegan record (I'll Take Care of You), but definitely my favorite album of 1990.

1989: Miracle Legion- Me & Mr. Ray

Miracle Legion was a "college rock" band, often compared to REM, although they never really sounded alike. If you haven't heard of them maybe you've heard of Polaris, the band who made all the theme music for The Adventures of Pete & Pete, which was Miracle Legion with another band member. After their first few releases the drummer and bass player of the band left, leaving singer Mark Mulcahy and guitarist Mr. Ray Neal, leading to the duo writing a more stripped down, acoustic album, Me & Mr. Ray. Mulcahy's voice is so versatile this album is all over the place, from upbeat toe tapping songs like "The Ladies From Town" to slower, heartfelt songs like "Sailors and Animals". Not limiting themselves, there is one song with an electric guitar, and "Cold Shoulder Balcony" consists solely of Mulcahy's voice and a flute. Closing out the 80's, this is without a doubt my favorite album of the decade.

Backed by Rick Rubin, Danzig was what rose from the ashes of Samhain, Glenn Danzig's band after he left Misfits. Blending dark metal with blues, this is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. It almost went unnoticed until the Mother '93 video started getting airplay on MTV, after they released a live version of the song that first appeared on their debut album. Little known fact, James Hetfield of Metallica did backup vocals on the songs "Twist of Cain" and "Possession", but couldn't be credited on the album due to being signed to a different record label. This album effortlessly goes from heavier, balls to the wall songs like "Twist of Cain" and "Am I Demon", to bluesy and spacious tracks like "She Rides" (Now a stripper anthem) and "Soul On Fire". Packed with classic lyrics, such as this gem from "The Hunter",

1986: Huey Lewis & The News- Fore!

Since "Sports" came out the year before I was born I was a little disappointed seeing as that's one of my favorite 80's albums, until I realized "Fore!" came out a few years later which fulfills my duty to work Huey Lewis into every facet of my life. My idol, Patrick Bateman, incorrectly said that this album came out in 1987, but it was actually 1986. And my dad was a huge fan of Huey so this is the only 80's album on my list that I've actually listened to since it came out. Blending pop, doo wop, rock, and soul together, Huey Lewis & The News made catchy and fun songs that still had substance. The song "Jacob's Ladder" is about someone explaining to evangelists trying to convert them that they can figure out their problems for themselves and don't need to convert for help, and it was also a #1 hit. You don't see too many songs with that kind of meaning making the charts too often. Several other songs also made the billboard charts, which is extremely impressive and shows the talent of everyone in the band as songwriters.

Distant Pictures Interview

Again I've had the pleasure of interviewing some favorite people of mine, this time it's Drew and Paul of Distant Pictures.

First off thanks for doing this.

Drew- Not a problem, sir.

Paul- No problem

So I guess first things first I should ask about Distant Pictures and what you guys have done and want to do with it.

Drew- Well, it started out truly because we were bored. Paul wanted to make a movie, and my friend Eder and I did as well, so we just kinda got together one summer and filmed us doing things we thought were funny. and somehow we created something. And that was Weaver, a story Eder and I had when we started college.

You didn't film or write anything before that?

Paul- I had been doing some jackass-type stuff like everyone else and some stuff for the school like battle of the bands and graduation. I don't think Drew had worked in the medium before.

Drew- Well, I was writing constantly of course but I never really filmed anything. Except once, we made something called The Ghost Hunter Hunter, which is lost and gone forever, unfortunately.

How was the whole process of doing Weaver?

Paul- It started out with alot of getting together and eating burritos. We had some writing sessions getting the plot and some of the jokes worked out, then we just shot it. It was mostly improvised by Drew and Eder.

Drew- Yeah, there was literally no script, just a really basic shot list. and then paul would tell us what to do. And Eder and I would basically just try to make each other laugh all day. Which we often did.

Paul- We never had more than one take on any scene

That leads into a question I wanted to ask. Is it easier to improv for comedy or does that tend to lead to lots of mistakes... I guess what do you guys think of writing out jokes versus the spontaneousness of random jokes and situations?

Drew- Well, for me, it's always nice to have a set subject, and a basic idea of what you went to express with the subject, and just go free reign from there. I've definitely gotten a lot better at writing jokes, and in the stuff we've made since, like Pizza and the Spare Change trailer, and things like that, we have stuck to a script. But then there's always that spontenaity of improv thats so alluring that you really cant help yourself. You spat out a line you find funny that wasn't originally there, and we go back and kinda go "Yeah, let's riff on that a while, too."

Paul- As the director of Drew and Eder I like the improv, they are better at that then written dialogue. And they are funny guys, just let them act like they do in real life. However, the more and more stuff we work on, the more scripted its seeming to become. Kind of a blend of the two.

Paul, is it hard to film improv knowing that you have no idea what they're going to do?

Paul- We come from the Kevin Smith school of filmmaking at this point, a set camera with not much movement. So the improv is easy to capture on the film, it's usually in the editing that it's harder to piece together since we're doing it multiple times, sometimes with different lines.

How do you guys go about writing?

Drew- It's a bit of a process for me, anyway. Lots of narrowing things down, kind of shaving things off, condensing them. I have the tendency to be long winded. I just try and make sure to stay concise, whether I'm working on a joke or illustrating something else, themetically, just staying on point. When it comes to the funny, though, I always bounce off Paul. If I can make him laugh, I know I'm on to something.

Paul- Yeah I'm not really a writer, I'm more of an idea guy. If I think of something I'll feed it to them. but usually Drew just bounces it off me.

Drew- Paul says the funniest shit ever, but he has no idea it's funny.

Does being in film school have any effect on what you do or is the medium and themes of your videos something entirely different from what you're learning about?

Paul- So far film school is kind of different from what most people think. We learn a lot of the basics but for the most part we are left to what we want to do, which is nice. So with our brand of humor, we arent really put out or anything.

Drew- Yeah, and even though we've learned a lot, and seen some really, really fantastic films, the quality of our stuff hasn't exactly changed.

Do you both want to make a career with filmmaking?

Drew- Yeah, definitely. In some capacity.

Paul- I want to be in the world of film, but not necessarily feature length films at this point. I'm kind of leaning towards starting my own production company at some point. Be it features, shorts, commercials I don't know yet.

Drew- Operating in the industry in some form is definitely the goal. We're doing our best to get there!

Do you have any advice on getting past having no budget and still making a quality video?

Paul- I think the most we have spent on a movie was $3.25 for an Oregon Burrito but we still get the laughs out there. Especially for comedy, I don't think you need a big budget, or one at all.

Drew- You just have to have confidence on what you're doing. If you have enough conviction in you're trying to create, budgets shouldn't be a constraint. ESPECIALLY if you're just posting it on the internet

What kind of equipment do you use? Cameras, editing software, etc.

Paul- Right now I have kind of assembled a small production kit of a Panasonic Camera, Shotgun mic and then I edit with Final Cut Pro. But back in Oregon we just got the camera and mic from the local tv station. I just had to take a really easy class and we could take out the camera, it sucked, but it was all we needed. That's what I would suggest to anyone who doesnt have a camera.

Drew- Yeah, there's always a means to get what you need, even if it isn't the best quality equipment... We're getting real inspirational here people.

So are there any future plans for anything right now?

Drew- At the moment, we're giving Weaver a complete face lift, retooling the script and story turning it into a feature length. The script is just about done and when it is, we'll definitely go the more legit route with it. Thanks to the connections we've made at school, we can have a whole crew and cast, and a decent budget eventually.

Paul- We just need to get Eder out here.

Drew- Yeah, he's the last piece of the puzzle

Awesome, are you going to shoot it in Chicago then?

Drew- Yeah, Chicago would be a good setting for Weaver, I think.

Lightning Round: You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?

Drew- That's a tough one, but think I'd have to stick to my roots and say blink-182's "untitled" record. It just barely beats out "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel.

Paul- I'm going to have to go with Modest Mouse, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank." They're one of my favorite bands and I listened to that album alot last year. So I probably won't get tired of it.

Paul- I hate to sound like a cliche film student, but I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. I don't think he's the best, but his style is his own and sets him apart.

Drew- Favorite actor, I think I'm gonna say David Hess. He appeared in a lot of grindhouse movies throughout the '70s and I've never seen anyone play sleazey better than him. Check out The Last House On the Left and Hitch Hike.

One of my favorite 80s albums by one of my favorite UK bands with one of my favorite singers. Funny this was their only album to hit number one on the charts in the UK. This album has a lot of political undertones which I'm not too familiar with, but the music speaks for itself. It was another breath of fresh air for a time when punk, metal and new wave was all that was going on. This album can be considered one of the first "indie" albums to ever be released.

1984: Prince & The Revolution- Purple Rain

Hopefully I'm not sued for using his likeness, but this is without a doubt the best non-score soundtrack ever. The first album of The Artist to feature The Revolution as a backing band, the genres and influences are all over the board, which is a large part of why this album was so accessible to all sorts of people. Winning three Grammies and an Oscar shows how much success it had to go along with the thirteen million albums sold. But it's by no means your average pop record. It's filled with great lyrics, exhibited most in the song I Would Die 4 You, written from Jesus' perspective in a conversation with a non-believer. "I'm not a human, I am a dove, I'm your conscious, I am love, All I really need to know is that you believe."

I like knowing stories about people, so I'm going to add another ongoing part of my blog along with The Coolest Shit... which will be people with interesting stories, updated when I think of them.

When I was 15 I was playing baseball in California and after a game a guy on my team was playing some rap in his car that caught my ear. Mostly because the person rapping was doing so on what sounded like a phone. So when I asked who it was he proceeded to skip to a track that started with an operator's voice, "You have a collect call from- X Mothafuckin' Raided- an inmate at Sacramento County Jail." He then told me the story of X-Raided and how he recorded his album Psycho Active over a pay phone from prison, and I've been a fan ever since.

Shortly after releasing his 1992 debut album Psycho Active, Anarae Brown (X-Raided) was convicted for the murder of a woman during a home invasion robbery. He has stated that he believed the home he was invading was that a member of rival gang Meadowview Bloods. Shortly before the album was released X-Raided was arrested and charged with murder in the first degree with gang-related murder. He was accused of murdering a rival gang member's mother.The lyrics in the album were used in his trial because they contained mirror images of the murder. The Gun on the cover of the album was said to be the murder weapon. The album's violent lyrics were cited as evidence at his trial. He is currently serving a 31 year sentence.

Picking up where we left off, enjoy.

RJ- Lets get back to Casey. How was it recording with him?

Ben- He was a goof.

Brian- I don't care how much anyone wants to fellate Casey for being a prog rock story telling god, the man's true talent is being fucking hilarious.

Ben- I felt like he was Wayne and Andy was Garth.

Aaron- Casey reminded me of the god Zeus, when he spoke it was like he was spitting lightning bolts.

Brian- He's just a really dynamic individual. He's not really the type of person you can ever relax around, but in a good way. You're always on your toes and I think that definitely helped us work hard.

RJ- Any funny stories he wouldn't mind you telling?

Brian- Well there's the Tim and Eric part...

RJ- The tv show?

Brian- Casey does an extremely accurate impression of Dr. Steve Brule (John C. Reilly) from Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job on Adult Swim. He did it the first day and it became a point of humor at least once an hour for the rest of the trip. Whether it was trying to get Casey to do it again or Jeff (Drums) and Mike attempting to impersonate him and failing.

Ben- I was recoridng a part once and after a take I was like "Yeah I don't think I've really got it all the way quite right." And he says "Listen, I don't really care. How about you just play your fucking part." Everyone laughed but me...

RJ- Kidding of course...

Ben- NO... haha yes.

Brian- I also enjoyed when Mike was recording vocals... Casey: "That was flat, do it again." Mike: "Yeah I don't really know whats happening... I mean I guess it's just because-" Casey: "Yeah, I didn't mean for you to delve into the reasoning behind it, I just wanted you to do it again."

Brian- He's a very no-bullshit guy but the mood always stays pretty light.

Brian- It was also nice when the rest of The Dear Hunter came in at various points, except for Sagan (Bass). Nick (Drums) was in a few days, Erick (Guitar) hung out all day once.

RJ- Is Erick really like the way he writes on the internet?

Brian- Pretty much.

Ben- Does he write with exclamations?

RJ- He writes like this... YOOOOOOOO DUDES!!!! NEW DEAR HUNTER ALBUM COMING SOON!!!! WORD? WOOOOOOOORD!!!!!!

His Hideous Heart Interview: Part 1

Last night I had the pleasure of interviewing three members of the indie rock band His Hideous Heart who just finished recording a yet to be titled EP. The following is recorded from an AIM chat with Aaron (Guitar), Ben (Cello), and Brian (Bass).

RJ- So I guess first thing I should ask is what you guys have been up to.

Brian- You know, we did a little recording, we've played a few shows, spent all our money.

Ben- We should tell him about Rhode Island.

RJ- I was going to get to that.

Brian- Ben's doing it wrong, for the record.

RJ- It's cool, you guys got anything to add to what Brian said?

Aaron- We recently played a show without a drummer. We used a computer instead. It was fun.

Aaron- Ben tried to play a guitar solo, but his guitar wasn't plugged in.

Brian- Luckily though, Mike (Guitar/Vocals) saved him and played the exact same thing so no one realized it.

Brian- Then after the show the other bands were making fun of us for having an 'electronic drummer'.

Ben- Haha really?

Brian- Yeah you didnt hear about that? They said something about it on stage. Something along the lines of "We even love the band with the electronic drummer!" after mentioning the other bands by name.

RJ- What do you guys think of the scene in cleveland?

Aaron- It's great!

Brian- Personally I think it is one of the most underrated in the country. It's small but there's so much potential.

Ben- I have not experienced other places, but yeah there are a lot of kickass bands.

Aaron- We have so many good bands. Like Bears, Coffinberry, To Be A High Powered Executive, etc. Also Akron has some great bands too and it's only an hour south.

RJ- Yeah, To Be A High Powered Executive has got a lot of attention lately... How was playing shows with them?

Brian- Fucking amazing. I love those guys to death.

Ben- They are very nice to talk to.

Aaron- I like that song with the pentatonic melody!

Brian- If I could have it my way, we would be Anakin to their Obi-Wan. But we wouldn't get all powerful and destroy them.

Aaron- Well if I had it my way, we would be Luke to their tauntaun, but we wouldn't cut them open and sleep in them.

RJ- Did they offer any words of wisdom or advice?

Brian- I was talking to Mike, their bassist, who is one of the most talented musicians national or local, and I basically asked him what we should do and he told me that it never really gets easier, at least it hasn't for them yet.

Brian- And they've enjoyed some moderate critical success within certain circles. They played South By Southwest, toured with Balmorhea, but they still deal with the same shit we do; people living all over the map, people moving around, not being able to practice or play shows when they want, not having money. So while that was kind of a bummer to hear, it also was reassuring that we can still keep going up even with the shit we have to deal with being all spread out like we are.

RJ- Did you guys feel that It's A Weird Time To Be Alive was a success for your situation?

Ben- It was a success that Mike's dad paid for it, otherwise we totally wouldn't have ever broken even. But from a less pragmatic standpoint I would say it was a mild success because it was recorded in Mike's basement over 3 months or something, while Mike was learning how to record music and stuff. And for that it sounds pretty good.

RJ- I remember seeing it on Sordo Archive one day and getting excited and telling Brian... I guess I should ask what you guys think about downloading.

Brian- Well I just downloaded 6 albums so that should tell you how I feel haha. It's just the way shit is done now. I think we are doing our best to adapt. We're all products of the internet free music movement.

Aaron- I don't really mind downloading at all, as long as people come to shows.

Ben- Yeah, same. I like the idea that people are listening to our stuff in any way.

Brian- And bands like us, and bands that are enjoying moderate success right now like The Dear Hunter, are kind of the forebearers. We want to be heard by as many people as possible, but we don't really care about money outside of what we need.

RJ- Something that was mentioned earlier, how is it having your band be apart most of the year?

Aaron- I think we handle it real well, we do lots over the internet. For this last album for example, 4 tracks were basically completed while we were in 3 states, and 2 were completed this summer.

RJ- Do you all do your own thing and then send what you've come up with to each other and go from there?

Brian- Basically.

Ben- What happens is one person will have a main idea for a song and will record it and send it to everyone else, then everyone else will absorb it and come up with their own parts, and then when we are together see if it works all together.

Brian- Aaron and Mike do most of that stuff. But I wrote one on my lonesome this year at school which I sent to everyone and eventually it turned into a full fledged song. Which felt awesome for me because I'm not much of a songwriter.

RJ- Is that going to be on the EP?

Brian- Yes, it will be on the record.

RJ- Well I guess we can get to Rhode Island now.

Brian- Yeah, we spent a week up in Providence, RI to record with Casey Crescenzo and Andy Wildrick from The Dear Hunter. It was quite the experience.

Ben- It was relaxed yet productive.

Brian- It was so amazing to be able to have all sorts of neat shit at our disposal.

RJ- How different was it than recording the first album?

Brian- It's basically like comparing the experience of building a mudhut with your bare hands in the dark to building a fully functional ecofriendly house with a team of experienced architects.

Ben- With the first album you would have to get the whole song, or a large chunk of the song right all at once because Mike didn't want to/know how to/have the capability to chop up separate takes into one cohesive take. So that was very difficult to do.

Brian- That's the one thing that gives me the slightest bit of hope for our band, is that we had not a single fucking atom of a clue what we were doing on that recording, yet it still came out listenable.

Aaron- Also the quality of our equipment and their equipment is so much better on this album. I was only on 2 tracks of the last album too.

RJ- Anything more you want to say about the new album?

Ben- Lots more singing, no instrumental tracks. Which I have mixed feelings about.

Brian- Oh right right. That's a concern of mine too.

Ben- Yeah I like being an instrumental band, sort of.

RJ- Did you think you were better suited as a post rock-ish band?

Ben- Well we do not have any strong singers, really. Which is sort of a problem. Granted it has not stopped bands from getting big in the past, but that's by far our biggest weakness. In the recordings, maybe it won't be evident, but in live shows it's always really nerve-wracking.

Brian- Yeah, none of us are too good except for Ariel (Vocals/Guitar), and despite how good she and our former girl singer, Bridget, are we haven't really nailed how to effectively utilize them yet. But that will come in time, we're still learning about this music shit.

Ben- Plus as an instrumental band you can bypass a lot of stereotypes more easily, I think. Once singing gets into effect you have to worry about stuff more. Cheesy lyrics, having a frontman, you know.

Aaron- I agree with Ben, but I sort of think instrumental bands can fall into a rut easily. You can only build up, freak out, die down so much, you know?

Brian- We have a post rock record, now we're working on a more indie rock one, and its all good but it's definitely still the sound of a band testing the waters. We've got a lot of different sounds on the new record, just as we did with the last one. But this time they're more indie rock sounding.

The new Emarosa album leaked, entitled Relativity. I like it a lot, they really showed that scene bands don't have to play exactly what the band ahead of them did and can sound great doing it. Jonny Craig's probably my favorite current singer right now. Dude's fucking amazing, and the switch from their old sound to a more ambient backdrop for him fits perfect. This is the first track on the album, which is probably the best way I can imagine starting a record.

I figured the first productive thing I should do is make a list of all the upcoming movies I want to see.

The Foot Fist Way: Currently in theaters, but only one in the city right now. I think I might be going Tuesday to see it.

The Dark Knight: July 18th. I want nothing more in the world right now than to see this movie.

Step Brothers: July 25th. There's no way this movie isn't better than Will and John's last few movies.

Pineapple Express: August 8th. Still not really sure what I think about this, but it'll be funny.

I don't really know what I'm going to do with this yet. I guess I'll ramble about things that piss me off and post music/videos/pictures I like.
